Woven Fibreglass Mesh for joints between plasterboards

Scrim Tape

Scrim tape is an open-weave, self-adhesive tape designed to strengthen and reinforce drywall joints. It acts as a bridge between sheets of plasterboard, preventing cracks and ensuring a smooth and even finish for decorating. Plasterboard tape is durable and made from fibreglass mesh. Due to its ease of use, it is an excellent alternative to paper jointing and is the most favourable option for plasterers and DIYers.

The fibreglass mesh means the scrim tape is strong and flexible as well as resistant to tearing. The added durability combats shrinkage and cracking to keep joints structurally sound. Many people purchase their plasterboard and scrim tape directly from our website.

50mm Plasterboard Scrim Tape

Due to its use, many people also refer to scrim tape as ‘plasterboard tape’ or even ‘drywall tape’. This is essentially the exact same thing as it references the application type. Our 50mm scrim tape is 50mm in width and 90m in length. The self-adhesive backing enables it to be directly applied to drywall joints. This can speed up the installation process when compared to other methods.

Plasterboard tape can reinforce drywall joints. This works by helping to distribute stress across a larger surface area. The extra reinforcement can prevent cracking as well as movement. This is most impactful in areas such as ceilings and walls, where they are prone to contraction and expansion.

Our Trade Insulations Plasterers Scrim Tape is high quality and fit for purpose. We advise that you order more tape than you require for your project to account for potential wastage.

Scrim tape can be used in a variety of applications. This includes plasterboard joints to cover gaps between sheets. It can also be used in ceiling work to provide extra strength where overhead movement is more likely. In addition to this, it can be used for as an internal corner and edge reinforcement to help maintain the integrity of corners and edges that are damage prone.

How To Use Scrim Tape?

Now that you know where it can be used, you may wonder how to use scrim tape. The answer is simple.
Firstly, you will want to ensure your plasterboard is clean from any dust or debris. The cleaner the surface, the easier the adhesive bond will work. Next, use a utility knife to unroll your tape and cut it to size. Now, you need to firmly press it over the joint between two sheets of plasterboard. The adhesive backing should hold this in place. When you are applying the tape to a flat joint, ensure that it is equally spaced equally on both sides of the plasterboard.

Taping internal corners may be slightly harder than doing flat joints, but the process is still easy enough for casual DIYer’s. You will want to tape internal corners to help prevent cracking. An easy way to do this is to start by securing the tape at the top of the internal corner joint. You can then press the tape into the seam whilst making sure it sits properly in the corner. Ensure that the tape is even spaced on both sides of the corner for proper stress distribution.

Can I use Scrim Tape For Cracks?

Yes, you can, but it depends on the severity of the crack. If the cracks appear along the joints of drywall, it is ideal for preventing future movement and adding extra reinforcement. Some people will apply scrim tape and then skim over minor hairline cracks, but it depends on how severe the crack is. Scrim tape alone won’t be the right solution if a crack is deep or structural.

Reasons to use Scrim Tape

  • It is easy to use even for non-professionals
  • It can cut down installation times
  • The fibreglass mesh gives it added strength and durability
  • Scrim tape is resistant to moisture, which can reduce the risk of mould growing.

Scrim tape is essential in plasterboard applications. If you are looking for high-quality 50mm scrim tape, simply place your order, and we can deliver it directly to you.
